Making Assets “Smart”
In the last five years, the rapid expansion of IoT (Internet of Things) applications gradually covers a variety of domains including smart devices, farming, healthcare, transportation, home appliances, production plants, business handling, and more. However, there are still many assets, some of which may be of very high value, that have not yet joined this trend, mainly because they are not equipped with Internet links and means to collect and share data.
Owners of assets such as personal safe boxes and jewel boxes or non-smart portable devices like medical and optical devices, would certainly like to be able to track and monitor those assets. To address this need, Fujitsu Component Europe just launched an innovative IoT Connectivity Solutions Evaluation Kit.
EASY INSTALLATION
The evaluation kit includes anchor nodes and asset tags for asset tracking and full packed sensor devices for environment monitoring equipped with the Wirepas Mesh software stack. The sensor devices are placed in the rooms where monitoring temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, movement, and luminance could be relevant for the evaluation. The scattered anchor nodes are connected using the Wirepas protocol to SolidRun’s SolidSense N6 Indoor Edge Gateway unit that relays the data over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. SolidSense connects “out of the box” to the cloud based Wirepas Mesh software package including the Wirepas Network Tool (WNT), which together with the Wirepas Mesh Positioning Engine (WPE), and a web based sample dashboard application create the cloud setup that provides the required services.
HOW DOES IT WORK AND WHAT DOES IT PROVIDE?
Once all devices have been installed, the floorplan of the building can be uploaded to the system and the anchor nodes are then discovered and mapped on the floorplan. The system provides real-time information about asset location and environmental data such as temperature and air quality enabling users to monitor their assets. Being easy to install and simple to operate, this kit can also be used for carrying out Proof of Concept and performance tests of the Wirepas Mesh on devices from Fujitsu, SolidRun and other eco-system partners.

SolidSense N6 Indoor Edge Gateway is an enterprise Internet of Things gateway designed for servicing a local network of IoT devices with a range of solutions and various applications. Based on the NXP i.MX6 Arm® Cortex® A9 processor and featuring 2 field programmable Nordic 2.4GHz chips, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, BLE and an optional LTE/GPS module in a small form factor enclosure.
Using the SolidSense software combined with Wirepas Mesh, the framework provides without any software development, the devices connected to the business applications. This is allowing fast and reliable IoT application development focusing the efforts on the business layer and added-value rather than spending energy on communication and technology problems.
