SolidRun’s i.MX8M Plus SoM running AMI firmware and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise

Windows 10 IoT reaches end of support on Oct. 25th 2025, which is 3 months from the writing of this article. Then why are we even writing this article and promoting this collaboration? The truth is that yes consumer releases for Windows 10 IoT are ending support, however the LTSC Enterprise version of the product will receive security and support updates until 2032, 7 years away. For deployments that have products and solutions built on this platform, we have a very unique product offering that includes our low power embedded life cycle iMX8M Plus SOM paired with AMI’s long term firmware that can provide support and hardware availability for the remaining support life cycle.

From a hardware perspective the iMX8MP SOM and either our ready for production carriers, including the CuBox-M, or your own purpose-built carrier, offers an excellent balance between processing, graphics performance, power consumption and industrial temperature operating range. With full graphics acceleration under Windows 10 it is simple drop-in replacement for many existing HMI (Human-Machine Interface) deployments that are already deployed on an aging x86_64 platform but may need a refresh to be supported for the next half a decade. The same reasoning can be applied to applications written for small gateways, or I/O control systems on Windows 10 IoT. It is most likely that it is far easier and cost effective to use Microsoft’s built-in cross compilation features to deploy on an Aarch64 based architecture rather migrate the application fully to Windows 11.

That is where our partnership and collaboration with AMI comes into play. As Sanjoy Maity the CEO of AMI pointed out in our recent video:

Their offerings on the i.MX8M Plus SOC provide the same firmware features that are available to x86_64 platforms running their firmware. All the infrastructure that has been built-out to provide updates and improve security at the firmware level for deployed products will remain the same when migrating to an ARM-based product. This level of parity between the products help to ease the burden of migration and removes the requirement of a customer managing their own firmware development and maintenance.
